With more than two decades of experience,
Peter Mann is San Diego’s leading expert
in the treatment of venous diseases.

As a fellowship trained vascular surgeon, he is uniquely qualified to provide his patients with the most technologically advanced vein care available anywhere.

Today’s varicose vein treatment options are simple, safe, minimally invasive and virtually painfree. Best of all there’s no down-time and many of the procedures are covered by medical insurance plans. Done in the office in less than an hour patients can walk out and be symptom free almost immediately.

The R.F. Closure (formerly known as the VNUS CLOSURE FAST) or Radiofrequency Ablation procedure, has replaced vein stripping, the traditional treatment for varicose veins. Vein stripping was a major surgical procedure requiring hospitalization, general anesthesia and several weeks of recovery time. During the R.F. Closure, the physician uses ultrasound technology to guide a thin R.F. catheter into the varicose vein through a very small opening (puncture wound as compared to making an incision). Radio frequency energy delivered to the diseased vein wall closes it off and eliminates backflow at the source. Only a local anesthetic is
used to avoid pain during this procedure.

What is the Radiofrequency Ablation Process?

You will visit the doctor for a preliminary session, where they will go over all the things you need to do to prepare for your appointment to get the treatment. The doctor will also ask you about all the supplements, prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs that you have taken recently.

The doctor may request that you avoid taking certain supplements, medications, and drugs in the days leading up to the treatment date. You will be given other specific instructions as well, so it’s important to listen to the physician’s guideline so that you have good results. You may also have someone else drive you to and from your appointment due to the effects of the anesthetic. This varies from patient to patient, so please consult with your specific vascular surgeon.

Here are the basic steps involved in the radiofrequency ablation
treatment on the day of the appointment:

  • 1) You will arrive at the clinic, which is usually an out-patient surgery office setting.

  • 2) The doctor will administer a local anesthetic on the area of your legs where the varicose veins are present. The anesthetic will help numb the area to reduce your pain and discomfort during the procedure.

  • 3) The doctor will make a small incision in the skin covering your varicose veins.

  • 4) The doctor will put the catheter into the incision area to access the varicose veins under the skin.

  • 5) The doctor will slowly send radiofrequency energy through the catheter to heat the varicose veins until they die and close off.

  • 6) The doctor will remove the catheter from your leg. Medical assistants will apply pressure to the incision area to stop the bleeding.

  • 7) A compression stocking is put on the leg to reduce swelling and bruising.

You can expect to spend 1 to 3 hours at the clinic to recover from the procedure. After that, you can go home under the direction of the doctor. They will advise you on how to care for the treated area for the next several days and weeks until it heals. The treated varicose veins are gone after the procedure therefore removing all the side effects you may have had from the disease. The doctor can recommend other vein treatments after this, such as ultrasound guided sclerotherapy to close the vein inside. This is another treatment that helps heal varicose veins and prevents them from recurring.
