Radio Frequency Closure (R.F.CLOSURE)

The R.F. Closure (formerly known as the VNUS CLOSURE FAST) or Radiofrequency A blation procedure, has replaced vein stripping, the traditional treatment for varicose veins.  Vein stripping was a major surgical procedure requiring hospitalization, general anesthesia and several weeks of recovery time. During the R.F. Closure, the physician uses ultrasound technology to guide a thin R.F. catheter into the varicose vein through a very small opening (puncture wound as compared to making an incision).  Radio frequency energy delivered to the diseased vein wall closes it off and eliminates backflow at the source. Only a local anesthetic is used to avoid pain during this procedure.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Its main objective is to seal shut the Great Saphenous or the Small Saphenous vein – the two main that cause varicosities.  Blood is then redirected into

the deeper normal veins with no alterations in the venous return.

Walking immediately following the procedure is encouraged and normal activity can be resumed immediately. Patients are instructed to wear medical grade compression stockings for the next two weeks. However, strenuous physical activity such as aerobics should be avoided for two weeks.

A follow up visit is usually scheduled within 7 -10 days. Symptoms dramatically begin to resolve within the next few weeks and patients notice a significant improvement in quality of life.

  • Only local anesthetic used.
  • Minimally-invasive
  • No scarring
  • Takes less than an hour to complete
  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately

Both the Radiofrequency Ablation procedure and the Endovenous laser (EVLT) and are similar in their clinical applications. The former uses a R.F. catheter and radiofrequency energy  while the Endovenous Laser uses a fiber optic probe  and laser energy to heat the vein wall. Choosing to do either the Endovenous laser or the R.F. Closure procedure is based upon the specific needs of the patient.
